My Dog Ate Underwear – What Should I Do Now?

So your dog just ate your underwear. What do you do now?

If you’re like most people, this is not a scenario that has ever happened to you before and many of the decisions are probably going to feel pretty hard.

The first thing to remember is that dogs eat poop all the time and it doesn’t seem to hurt them so chances are they’ll be okay if they ate some underwear too.

Keep reading to learn what to do in case your dog ate underwear.

Is It Normal For Dogs To Eat Underwear?

Dogs have a sense of smell that is over one million times better than ours. They also like to dig around things, so it’s really not that unusual for them to eat underwear.

In fact, there are even some dogs that seem to crave underwear *gulp*.

So if you’re like me and think your dog might be an underwear fanatic, you might want to double-check every now and then just in case!   And don’t feel bad! This kind of thing has happened before (I hope!)…

Can Dog Get STDS From Eating Underwear?

Yes. If your dog ate your underwear because you had vaginal discharge on it, then there’s a chance they may have contracted STDs. This is entirely possible!

But the good news is that if it happens and you take them to the vet right away they’ll be able to get some medication to help flush out their system.

Can A Dog Pass Underwear?

Depends on how big the dog is and what type of underwear. A small dog can pass through underwear with ease, but an adult or large dog would find it very hard to do so.

A canine’s chyme (stomach) functions differently than a human, causing sounder stools that are different in volume and consistency from human stools.

How Long Will It Take For My Dog To Pass Underwear?

It would depend on the size of both the dog’s stomach and bowels. If they have a large stomach or bowel then it could take up to a week for the dog to pass underwear but if they have one that is not as big then it may be able to happen very quickly.

Another factor that plays in is how long has your dog been eating underwear? The longer they keep eating it, the harder time their intestines will have getting them out of their system.

What Should I Do If My Dog Ate My Underwear?

If you suspected that your dog had eaten your underwear or clothes, cleaning up the mess is usually the first step.

There isn’t much else you can do about this situation, but if your dog seems okay and has no symptoms then there’s a good chance that they will be just fine!

If your dog ate underwear or clothes recently, contact their vet for advice.

If the underwear is gone and you suspect that it was eaten at some point in time, then just keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t have any symptoms of being sick from the underwear.

Some common home remedies are feeding your pup vegetables, giving them probiotics – which are good for intestinal flora, stop feeding them treats like rawhide chews or pig’s ears, and administer them laxatives (such as milk of magnesia).

Make sure you keep an eye on your dog’s belly, if it feels like they’re bloated then make sure you contact a veterinarian.

You can also give them some diarrhea remedies such as Kaopectate or Immodium.

My Dog Ate Underwear And Is Throwing Up – What Should I Do Now?

If your dog ate underwear and is throwing up, you should take them to the vet as soon as possible!

Dogs can throw up their stomachs out of reflex when they eat something that goes against nature. It sounds crazy, but dogs have almost the same reaction to eating something bad as humans do.

They may even feel nauseous or experience diarrhea right after they threw up!

My Dog Ate Underwear And Now Has Diarrhea – What Should I Do Now?

If your dog ate underwear and now has diarrhea, you should take them to the vet right away!

Diarrhea is very common when dogs eat things they shouldn’t be eating. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most common is that their stomachs can’t break down certain foods as well as ours do.

What Will The Vet Do?

The vet will examine the dog and give them a physical to see if there are any symptoms of pain or discomfort.

They may also run some tests on their system to see if they found anything in their digestive tract that shouldn’t be there, such as cloth from your underwear!

The vet might use x-rays to check the inside of the dog’s stomach, intestines, liver, or kidneys.

Possible Treatments

If you’ve gotten this far and your dog is still healthy then it’s likely that when you go to the vet they’ll recommend medicine for diarrhea (such as metronidazole).

They might also want to flush out his intestines so that’s why they may recommend laxatives.

Finally, they may just recommend a change in your dog’s diet, and some people have even been told to have their dog x-rayed to see what’s left in there.

How Long Will Diarrhea Last?

Sometimes it can last for a few weeks before passing.  Other times the diarrhea is so extreme that the dog will continue passing it until they’ve gotten rid of whatever it was they ate.

If you give them medication fast enough then their body might be able to heal faster than usual, but if not then it could take anywhere from days to months!

My Dog Ate Underwear – How Long Will This Take?

It really depends on your pet! Dogs are always trying new foods and eating things off the ground, so this is very common.

Your dog might just vomit a few times and then be fine, or they could end up with diarrhea for the next month!

Some of the most common things include:

  1. Diarrhea.
  2. Vomiting.
  3. Bloat.
  4. Stomach problems (including pain).
  5. Infections due to bacteria from food remnants that should have been processed by the stomach before getting to the intestines.

Keep an eye on your dog as well as their bowel movements, if there are white or yellowish portions mixed in then you should contact a vet immediately!

They’ll examine your pet and try to diagnose what’s going on. Sometimes it will take some time because there are hundreds of things that could cause these symptoms, but with the right treatment, your dog will be fine!

My Dog Ate Underwear – How Much Should I Feed Him/Her?

It’s usually enough to give a dog one small meal. Depending on how much your dog weighs you could feed them 2-3 cups of food per day.

Also, dogs should not be fed once they have already had diarrhea or if their stools are runny!

As humans, we know that when we eat something and experience diarrhea afterward it’s still okay to consume some more food but this is actually the wrong thing to do with a pet.

Some foods can cause diarrhea in some pets, just like some foods can cause nausea or vomiting in humans.

When a dog throws up there isn’t anything coming out of its stomach anymore and what might come out next will most likely be extra water, which means that its system doesn’t need any more food.

If you give them food after vomiting, they could end up consuming their vomit causing even more problems! If your dog just had diarrhea and is still able to hold his/her food down then it’s safe to feed him small amounts of food 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days.

How To Prevent This From Happening Again In Future

To prevent any of these problems you need to go about it in two steps:

The First Step

First, check your dog’s diet and see if there could be something missing in their food.

If they’re not getting enough water or vitamins then their body might try to get these nutrients another way.

Check the ingredients of the foods you’re feeding them (although this is often too hard).  I recommend checking each ingredient on a website like http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/ where you can compare and contrast different brands’ foods depending on what type of food it is (dry, wet, etc.).

To make things easy, you can just get high-quality dog food like Blue Buffalo Wilderness which is made with natural ingredients in mind.  Try mixing this up and see if it helps!

The Second Step

The second step is to train your dog not to chew on your underwear or stick their nose anywhere near it.

This can be very difficult to do, especially because dogs will always try to find new ways to eat the strange things they find, but knowing what might happen should motivate you and help convince them easily in the long run.

My Dog Ate Underwear – What Else Can I Do?

Once you’re able to prevent your dog from eating any more underwear it’s important not to neglect them anymore.

Dogs with unexercised, over-fed bodies rarely live past 10 years of age, and most often die at an even younger age due to joint problems, heart disease, or another organ failure.

It’s important to remember that it costs much less, in the long run, to exercise your dog instead of trying to keep him/her from eating strange things.

Exercising your dog is also a great way to bond with them and increase the chances that they will be happy, healthy, and obedient pets for many years!

A few simple exercises include running around with them in an open field or pulling silly stunts on a skateboard while they chase you (this last one might not work so well if they’re afraid of heights or have never been on a board before).

Conclusion

There are some things you should always do if your dog eats something he/she isn’t supposed to.

Always call the vet, and never let them eat anything else until they’ve been checked out. This way you’ll be able to know if your dog needs to go to the emergency room or not!
